CIÉ Group Archives

CIÉ Group Archives was established in 2023 to acquire, preserve and make available the records created by the CIÉ Group of Companies and its predecessor transport companies that are preserved as archives. 

These archives consist of the corporate records of CIÉ from 1945 onwards and its immediate predecessor the Great Southern Railways Company (1924-1944). The bulk of our collections comprise the records of the almost eighty railway companies that were formed and operated in Ireland from the 1830s up until the 1920s and which were, through a series of mergers, almost all subsumed into one of the three main railway companies of early twentieth century Ireland: the Great Southern and Western Railway Company, the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) Company, and the Midland Great Western Railway Company. We also hold the archives of some canal and road transport companies.
