What We Do

The goal of the CIÉ Group (“the Group”) is to deliver attractive sustainable public transport services, which supports the continued growth of the Irish economy and social cohesion. The Group has the unique capacity to manage a cost effective delivery of high quality public transport solutions across Ireland. The Group works in collaboration with its shareholder, the Minister of Transport, and with the regulator, the National Transport Authority (NTA).

As the leading provider of public transport services in the State, the CIÉ Group is committed to provision of accessible services for all of its customers.

Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) is Ireland's largest public transport provider. The key annual statisitcs are outlined below.

CIÉ celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2020. Under the Government’s National Development Plan through to 2027, CIÉ’s activities are linked to capital investment in excess of €4Bn.

Strategic direction, control and overall co-ordination of the Group is provided by the CIÉ Board, but each subsidiary has a high degree of operating autonomy in its day to day business. The CIÉ Board is appointed by the Government under Section 6 of the Transport Act 1950.

The boards of the Irish Operating Companies are appointed by the Minister of Transport. The CIÉ Board appoint the Directors to CIÉ Tours International Inc.

The Group continues to provide safe, customer-focused public transport to an increasing number of customers.

The CIÉ Group provides key services to the public across all demographics and is very conscious of its social responsibility through each of its Operating Companies.

The following are the CIÉ operating companies:


Bus Éireann provides city, town and provincial bus services outside of Dublin through a Direct Award Contract with the National Transport Authority (NTA). It also provides schools services funded by the Department of Education and Science. It operates ‘Expressway’ services (Intercity bus services) on a fully commercial basis.

Bus Átha Cliath - Dublin Bus operates the vast majority of bus services in the greater Dublin area through a Direct Award Contract with the National Transport Authority. Bus Átha Cliath - Dublin Bus also operate certain commercial services such as sightseeing tours (Do Dublin).

Iarnród Éireann provides passenger and some freight rail services as well as operating Rosslare Europort. All passenger services are provided through a Direct Award Contract with the National Transport Authority.

Rosslare Europort is the fourth largest port in Ireland in terms of overall tonnage handled, and the State’s second largest Ro-Ro traffic and passenger port. The port is operated as a division of Iarnród Éireann, who are the Port Authority for Rosslare Europort.  The port has excellent road, rail and sea connectivity, which handles roll on roll off freight and passengers, Agricultural and Trade vehicles, Bulk cargo, Oversize loads, Cruise ships, Wind turbines and other renewable energy facilities.
