CIÉ and Sustainability

Sustainable public transport is at the centre of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Public transport represents a low carbon and energy efficient way of connecting people to their community, education, and employment. Ireland’s 2021 Climate Action Plan aims to cut transport-related CO2 emissions by 42-50% by 2030, which will require an increase of 500,000 additional walking, cycling, and public transport journeys per day. CIÉ Group have a large part to play in achieving these goals.

What we do

Public transport is a key element of sustainable development, and we aim to provide a safe and accessible transport system that minimises any impacts to the environment. The CIÉ Sustainability Steering Group across Bus Éireann, Bus Átha Cliath and Iarnród Éireann works to implement our comprehensive strategy that works toward environment, social, and economic sustainability.

CIÉ and the Sustainability Steering Group has set targets that establish our commitment to sustainability. These targets are in line with Irish and EU climate legislation.
The CIÉ Group Sustainability portfolio spans priority areas of:
• Climate Action
• Transport-oriented Development
• Responsible Consumption and Production
• Climate Resilience
• Biodiversity
• Community Engagement and Heritage
• Health and Wellbeing
• Gender Equality and Equal Opportunity
• Partnerships

Hydrogen Bus Trial

CIÉ Group, along with Bus Átha Cliath and Bus Éireann and stakeholders in Hydrogen Mobility Ireland (HMI) and Dublin City University (DCU) delivered the trialling of the first hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle on the roads in Ireland.  This was the first step in the trialling of the potential zero emissions fuel cell technology.
Following on from the initial hydrogen bus trial, three double deck hydrogen fuel cell buses entered service in the Greater Dublin Area in mid-July 2021 as part of an alternative fuels technology pilot being undertaken by the National Transport Authority (NTA) in conjunction with Bus Éireann.
